Sign up to OPHI UNDP online course: Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)
Back by popular demand, OPHI and the United Nations Development Programme are delighted to launch their second Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) entitled ‘Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)’ next month. The course is free to access, open to all, and for the first time will also be offered in French and Spanish. The course provides registrants with an introduction to developing a holistic multidimensional poverty index (MPI) to complement income-based measures and reveal multiple overlapping deprivations across health, education and living standards. It is recommended for anyone with an interest in multidimensional poverty measurement, including students, academics, technicians and policymakers. Running for six weeks from 22 February, the course includes lessons, videos, quizzes and a discussion forum facilitated by experts from OPHI and UNDP. The syllabus has been jointly developed with the UNDP based on the guide ‘How to Build a National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI): Using the MPI to inform the SDGs’ (2019). The following areas will be covered:
- Introduction to the Multidimensional Poverty Index
- Generating support for the national MPI
- The technical process of creating a national MPI – Part 1
- The technical process of creating a national MPI – Part 2
- Using national MPIs as policy tools
- Applying the MPI towards a COVID-19 recovery
This introduction to multidimensional poverty measurement is intended to help inform the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially SDG 1 to ‘end poverty in all its forms and dimensions’.
