Malawi MPI Report launches

The Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development and Public Sector Reforms and the National Statistical Office (NSO),  launched the first Malawi National Multidimensional Poverty Index (M-MPI) today. 

The Malawi Multidimensional Poverty Index (M-MPI) Report, which has been developed with support from OPHI and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been produced using data from the Fourth Integrated Household Survey (IHS4), as an official measure of multidimensional poverty, complementing existing monetary measures of poverty. 

The newly released Report aims to identify the key simultaneous disadvantages that affect multidimensionally poor people so that this can be used for evidence-based policy formulation. The findings and recommendations of the report will help in providing important information for monitoring the progress of the national priorities outlined in the Malawi 2063 and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This will help to improve the lives of those in need and leave no one behind. 

The launch of the report brought together senior officials from Government, private sector, civil society representatives, development partners, researchers, academicians, and the media, to learn about the overlapping indicators contributing to different levels of multidimensional poverty among various groups across the country.
