OPHI Training

Since its inception, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative has conducted training courses on survey design and implementation, data analysis, and multidimensional measurement for OPHI partners. Those interested in creating and implementing a multidimensional poverty measure should also consult the OPHI webpage on how to apply the Alkire Foster method. OPHI partners are offered training in OPHI materials and methodologies after a partnering proposal has been finalized and accepted. In addition, OPHI may be contracted for demand-driven executive education courses, specialized courses for institutions, researcher training modules, undergraduate and graduate course modules, and workshops and conferences. OPHI also offers open registration short courses, including an annual summer school. Materials from previous short courses are available for free on this website.

Examples of Previous Training:

OPHI Training for PEP survey teams from Nigeria, Chad and Sri Lanka
In 2009, OPHI staff in Oxford conducted a training course on survey design, implementation and analysis for representatives of three successful teams that were awarded grants by OPHI and the Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) network. The training preceded the three teams’ implementation of OPHI’s survey modules in parts of Chad, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. The surveys were designed to generate data on the Missing Dimensions and also to investigate the validity of the survey instruments in their particular countries. The course was created to familiarize the participants with academic research on survey design. This training also provided support to the participants’ design of an integrated questionnaire, guidelines for implementation, Access database, as well as the identification of key research questions and strategies for data tabulation and analysis–all of which they drew upon when implementing the survey in their own countries.
