Policy Applications

The Alkire Foster method for multidimensional measurement has been taken up by policy makers. Bhutan uses the Alkire Foster method to calculate their national measure of wellbeing, the Gross National Happiness Index, Mexico have used the method to create their new multidimensional poverty measure and Colombia used the method to create a national multidimensional poverty measure tied to binding poverty reduction targets.

To learn about how the method can be applied to create national poverty and wellbeing measures, and to learn more about how national measures such as those developed by Bhutan and Colombia have been constructed, read our Policy pages.

Information about other policy applications of the Alkire-Foster method is also available, including the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index, developed jointly by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and OPHI to measure women’s roles and engagement in the agriculture sector.
