South Asia in Transition

Oxford, UK, 25-26 November 2011

“South Asia in Transition,” a conference co-sponsored by OPHI and the Department of Sociology, Oxford University will take place in Oxford, 25-26 November.

The South Asian subcontinent has experienced profound social, political, economic and cultural transformations in the past two decades. This conference seeks to explore and capture these changes through a wide range of analytical perspectives. For the purposes of this conference South Asia is taken to encompass India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Maldives.

South Asia as a whole is increasingly gaining attention in contemporary social science research and this conference will create an opportunity for debate and discussion on contemporary research as well as initiating new collaborative research on South Asia. We hope that the proposed conference can be a major step in establishing relationships among early career researchers working on South Asia.

Papers are invited on a broad range of topics including multidimensional poverty, political participation, resistance and social exclusion.

Attendance is free, but registration is mandatory.

Measurement Errors and Multidimensional Poverty Data measurement errors can cause an upward bias in unidimensional poverty estimates and thus mislead both conceptual and empirical discussions. This paper expands the analysis to the case of multidimensional poverty. It finds that the dual cut-off strategy used by the Alkire-Foster measure typically attenuates this bias. Empirical evidence from Peru supports this attenuation effect. Read more
